"In the aging orphanage the days pass very uneventfully, but the nights are something quite different; at least for Tim they are. The light reflected from the stars is the only cure for his fear of the dark. One night this fear leads him to the orphanage rooftop. Where he discovers that his favourite star has disappeared, and unfortunately it’s not going to be the last one. Tim also discovers the Cat Shepherd and his faithful cat Tobermory, that will become Tim's personal guardians. Tim convinces the Shepherd to take him to see Moka, the guardian of the night, and pleads for him to return the stars to the night sky." - Instituto Cervantes de Manila

September 3, 2011 (Saturday) - "Welcome Mr. Marshall"

Villar del Río is a peaceful, poor and forgotten town, where nothing new ever happens and the routine is the same day in and day out. Now the arrival of singer Carmen Vargas and her manager and agent have shaken up the town’s boring life. That same morning, a government representative suddenly shows up to announce the imminent arrival of a commission from the Marshall Plan. On hearing of the news, the town mayor, a good-natured albeit a slightly deaf man, decides to dress all the denizens in the purest Andalusian style to welcome the visitors. Juan Antonio Bardem and Luis García Berlanga, assisted by Mihura, wrote this corrosive story based on the unease Spain felt at being left out of the distribution of US aid (aka the Marshall Plan), which aimed to reconstruct a Europe ravaged by the World War.

María José and Juan are on their way from a date when they run a cyclist over and kill him. They’d been going steady years before, but then María José had married Miguel, and Juan had become her lover. Obsessed by the shadow of the dead cyclist –who they abandoned on the road side–, they are afraid of everything and of everyone; afraid of their relationship being revealed and of losing their social position. The situation becomes more complicated until it comes to a tragic end.

This is the story of a group of friends from a provincial city in the Fifties who play tricks on each other to while away their boredom. One of them, Juan, pretends to have fallen in love with Isabel, a beautiful 35-year-old who’s fated to become an old maid. She gets all excited and acts like a teenager when she realizes someone has fallen in love with her. Things get more and more intense until Juan finds himself caught in his own trap.


September 24, 2011 (Saturday) - "The Little Apartment"

Rodolfo and Petrita have been together for twelve years. Before they can get married, they need a flat, but they just can’t find one. Rodolfo is subletting a room in a flat owned by Mrs. Martina, a decrepit old lady who’s about to kick the bucket and her landlord is eager for her to pop off so he can knock down the building. Some people advise Rodolfo to do the heroic: marry Mrs. Martina and wait it out so that he can inherit the flat. Rodolfo resists, but he becomes weaker and weaker by the day.

August 6, 2011 (Saturday) - "Invisibles"

The 'invisibles' are all those we refuse to see - people who seldom garner the attention of the West's media - as well as those who nevertheless refuse to stop caring for them. This film is dedicated to all those whose support makes it possible for the international aid agency "Médecins Sans Fron tières" to work in a wide range of crisis-hit areas and war zones all over the world. This collection of short documentaries was made to commemorate the founding of the Spanish section of "Médecins Sans Frontières" twenty years ago. Five film directors visited the places where the organisation works. In her cinematic "Letter to Nora", Isabel Coixet provides an account of some of the victims of sleeping sickness - a disease which currently affects 18 million people in Latin America. In his contribution, Fernando León de Aranoa portrays the plight of children in Uganda. Mariano Barroso describes two different ways of using the active pharmaceutical ingredient eflornithine - one in Africa, and the other in the world's fashion capital, Paris. In his short film, Javier Corcuera examines the long-term effects of post-war trauma. Wim Wenders travelled to Congo, where he made a film about mass rape during the civil war.

Winner of the Goya for Best Documentary, the film narrates the developments in the conflict of the Sintel workers and the construction of the famous Camp of Hope right in the middle of Madrid. It is a documentary on striking workers who set up Camp of Hope for four months in 2001. Details sketched in via testimony from strikers.


August 20, 2011 (Saturday) - "Night Flowers"

A look at the transformation of the Spanish city, Pozo del Tio Raimundo. From a shantytown of Madrid built vertiginously in the fifties that grew as the night flowers at night time, the “red” priest Father Llanos gave to immigrants his Utopian dream seeking for justice and freedom. Days and years of solidarity passed, of rebelliousness and of forging a new identity, aspiring with a belief that, starting from the shantytown, the world could be changed. How did these people take awareness of their situation and with sheer force and cohesion as a humane group they undertook the transformation?


August 27, 2011 (Saturday) - "The Back of the World"

This documentary looks at "the back of the world": small children working as quarrymen in Peru, Kurdish political refugees from Turkey, and families and inmates awaiting the end on Mississippi's Death Row.
